Solution-focused Therapy

Solution-focused Therapy

Solution-focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a brief, goal-directed therapy that seeks to orient the client toward solutions rather than the problems that bring them to therapy. This therapy assumes that a person has all the resources and strengths necessary to create solutions for their problems. SFBT utilizes several specific tools to identify a person’s vision of success and a means of achieving that vision.

SFBT looks for previous successes. Most clients have had times when they used their own solutions in the past.

This therapy strategy also looks for exceptions to problems. When looking at times when a problem isn’t present, the client can consider what things were helping at that time. SFBT uses specific questions to focus on the future, rather than the past, and scaling questions to measure progress in each session. Conditional statements and questions (e.g., What will you be doing a month from now that will let you know that things are getting better) help a client to formulate his/her vision. This also allows clients to identify measurable behaviors and thoughts that he/she will implement to reach their goals. The Institute of Solution-focused Brief Therapy cites research that has shown SFBT to be effective in improving psychological problems, and it offers the benefit of improvement in a shorter time frame than many other types of therapy.
